Description
The Russian Caravan blend is in fact a Chinese tea, but the name is derived from the caravans sent between the two nations in the 18th century. Russia traded furs with China for tea, and it is believed that due to the campfires set along the way, the tea absorbed the smokiness of the fires. The Chinese prepared the tea for the long journey to Russia by oxidising it more than usual so as to keep it fresh. The modern version of Russian caravan tea obtains the smokiness reminiscent of the original tea from blending in another tea known as Lapsang Souchong, which is smoke-dried over pinewood fires and absorbs a distinctive smoky flavour.
